LOS ANGELES >> Fourteen years ago, when Joe Maddon was the Angels bench coach, his team handed the ball for Game 7 of the World Series to an untested rookie named John Lackey.
On Wednesday, as manager of the Chicago Cubs, Maddon will hand the ball for Game 4 of the National League Championship Series to a wily old veteran named … John Lackey.
And, to hear Maddon tell it, there is little difference.
“He hasn’t changed at all,” Maddon said. “He’s in better shape. That’s my answer. He’s actually in physically better shape than he was. Check out the pictures from 2002 compared to how he looks now.”
Aside from having a little more youthful fat back then, Lackey has the same repertoire then as now, despite 14 years and one Tommy John surgery in between.
Lackey has a slider and a changeup, which has improved, but Maddon said he’s still essentially a guy who lives with a 92-94 mph fastball.

They will see the same man that helped University High of San Diego win a state title his senior year patrol the Lakers’ sideline. Michigan moved up to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll, right behind No. 2 Ohio State, to give the Big Ten rivals their best combined ranking since the 2006 season, when they played the only 1-vs.-2 game in the series.
Alabama remained No. 1 on Sunday with a season-high 60 first-place votes. The Buckeyes stayed No. 2 after an overtime victory against Wisconsin, which fell two spots to 10th. Galaxy clinch home playoff game with shutout of Houston

HOUSTON >> Alan Gordon scored in the 72nd minute and the Galaxy beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 on Sunday to clinch a home game in the knockout round of the MLS Cup playoffs.
The Galaxy (12-6-15) are locked into the No. 3 seed in the Weste Conference a week ahead of the regular-season finale. Houston (7-14-12) remained in last place in the West.
In the buildup to Gordon’s goal, Dynamo goalkeeper Joe Willis made a diving save of Mike Magee’s shot attempt but failed to secure it. David Horst awkwardly attempted to poke the loose ball safely away but Gordon swooped in and blocked it back into the net.

PLAYA VISTA >> Seeing Chris Paul in running shoes and sweatpants before a Clippers practice certainly isn’t good news. And, seeing Paul, the Clippers’ star point guard, standing in running shows and sweats with hand wrapped, well that means the news is certainly worse.
Luckily for the Clippers, appearances can sometime be deceiving.
While Paul didn’t practice Sunday because of his hand injury, he’s not expected to miss any real time. Paul’s officially being called “day-to-day” with a sprained left thumb, an injury he likely would be able to play with if the Clippers were in the regular season.
“He’ll play in definitely one of the two (remaining preseason games), and that tells you it’s not that serious,” Doc Rivers said.
Paul suffered the injury Saturday, but he was still able to finish practice.
He broke a bone in his shooting hand, his right, last postseason, an injury that required surgery and cost him the remainder of his season.

PULLMAN, WASH. >> Last year, Washington State knocked off UCLA in dramatic fashion in the Rose Bowl, scoring the game-winning touchdown with three seconds left. Safety Adarius Pickett said he thought the Bruins “owed them one.”
When they had to a chance for revenge, the Bruins fell short. Playing without starting quarterback Josh Rosen (shoulder and hip), UCLA couldn’t keep pace with Washington State’s high-powered offense, falling 27-21 in front of a rain-soaked crowd of 29,301 at Martin Stadium. LONG BEACH >> The St. Anthony High football team took care of business with a 43-6 nonleague victory over Bishop Montgomery at Clark Field on Friday.
“Our defense set the tone early as (Bishop Montgomery) only had two or maybe three first downs in the first half,” said Saints coach Mario Morales. “We are real big on the physical part of the game and I know our defense established that physicality early on and that was good for us.”
The Saints wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard on a 10-play, 58-yard drive on their first possession of the game, highlighted by a 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Johnny Buksa to tight end Kaman Selu.
After forcing a three-and-out, Saints running back Talaun Patton bulldozed his way for nine yards on their next drive to give the Saints a 14-0 lead with a little over 4 minutes left in the quarter. DOWNEY >> Just about everything that could go wrong for Lynwood High’s football team did Friday night as the Knights had their homecoming celebration spoiled right from the opening kickoff in a 35-7 San Gabriel Valley League loss to Downey.
Lynwood (3-4, 0-2) committed 16 penalties, tued the ball over five times (two interceptions, one fumble, twice on downs) and was forced to punt on four occasions.
The Vikings (6-1, 2-0) took full advantage, beginning with the first play of the game, recovering a fumble after a Knights’ lateral attempt on the kickoff. Just three snaps and about 55 seconds later, Downey got on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run from Emari Demercado.
From there, Downy scored on a 70-yard screen pass from Trevor Hill to Christopher Atkins and a 24-yard strike from Hill to Tony Ramirez and coasted into halftime with a 22-0 advantage.

Rickard Rakell has ended his contract standoff with the Ducks, with the talented forward signing a six-year deal Friday that will pay him $22.8 million.
Rakell’s agent, Peter Wallen, confirmed the agreement to the Orange County Register. The new contract for the restricted free agent will carry a $3.8 million salary cap hit. Wallen said the contract does not contain a no-movement clause.
A corrective surgery Sept. 17 to remove scar tissue from his appendectomy in March kept Rakell from playing for Sweden in the World Cup of Hockey. His recovery also removed any added urgency to report to training camp Sept. 23.
It allowed the two sides to continue working on an extension while Rakell got well. Talks never ceased even when a gap persisted, but indications were emerging that both were building a bridge, presenting the possibility a deal could be reached sooner than later.

Eric Gomez laughed when recalling his first fight-night duties at Golden Boy Promotions.
“One of my jobs was unfolding the chairs,” he said. “Putting the chairs on the floor, putting the little stickers with the numbers on the chairs, picking up the managers, picking up the fighters from the airport, renting the van. I’d do the travel, I used to do the hotel reservations, I used to do the medical certifiers, I used to do the licensing.”
That was 2002, the year Golden Boy opened its doors. Fourteen years later, on Sept. 7, Gomez was promoted to president of the company owned by childhood friend and Hall of Fame fighter Oscar De La Hoya.

The parity in the Pac-12 can be a curse for the conference as it tries to break into the College Football Playoff, but the wild weekends on the West Coast continue to fuel the UCLA football team’s hopes for a chance at the conference championship.
The Bruins (3-3, 1-2 Pac-12) say they are down but not out of the Pac-12 race, entering Saturday’s game at Washington State at 7:30 p.m. The unpredictability in the Pac-12 South gives them hope, but they can’t afford many more missteps.
The Bruins could easily leave Pullman, Wash., at 1-3 in Pac-12 play for the first time under head coach Jim Mora. Their starting quarterback’s health is still a question. They haven’t had a running threat in nearly a month. They’re facing a surging team that just knocked off Stanford, something UCLA hasn’t done in almost a decade.

The Suburban League held its second cross country meet of the season at Cerritos Regional Park where Cerritos took the top two spots in the boys race. However, La Mirada won the meet with five of the top eight finishers and all but clinched a share of the league title.
Bill Chuang was first for the Dons with a time of 16:39 and Brandon Vo was the top finisher for the Matadores at 16:49. Cerritos freshman Cole Sawires Yager finished second.
In the girls race, Norwalk took the meet and the top two spots with juniors Misty Diaz and Ruby Galindo. Diaz finished at 18:55.

LOS ANGELES >> USC running back Justin Davis, who has a high ankle sprain, will not play on Saturday at Arizona, Trojans head coach Clay Helton announced.
Davis was not at practice this week.
“He’s still being very tender on the ankle,” Helton said.
Through six games, the 6-foot-1 senior leads the Trojans in rushing with 476 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He had 341 yards in the past three games, including consecutive 100-yard rushing efforts against Utah and Arizona State.
Davis injured his right ankle in the second half of USC’s 21-17 win over Colorado last Saturday. He left the locker room afterward on crutches. A walking boot was placed on his right foot.
“It’s a next-man-up mentality,” Helton said.
In place of Davis, sophomore Ronald Jones is expected to start.
One season after he set a school single-season freshman rushing record, Jones has not been as productive.
He has 208 rushing yards and one touchdown on 46 carries.

The Wilson High girls golf team clinched its eighth consecutive Moore League team title by beating Long Beach Poly 221-247 on Tuesday at Recreation Park Golf Course. Wilson (17-4, 8-0) was once again led by senior Ali Morallos, who made one birdie and finished at 1-over-par 39. Riley Henry added a round of 43 for the Bruins that included four pars, and Maya Olson was the low finisher for Poly with 45.
“We continue to be blessed with a group of dedicated players that are always putting in extra work to make sure they are prepared for competition,” Wilson coach Jeff Evans said.
Monday is the first day of the Moore League Individual Touament, where Morallos will try to win her third consecutive league title. Last year, she shot 11-under (135) to post the lowest total score in league girls’ golf history.
